KOTA SAMARAHAN: Diabetes or diabetes has grown substantially in Malaysia and Sarawak as well as more than 20 percent of the people of this country are living with the disease.
According to Vice Chairman of the Diabetes Malaysia Sarawak Branch (DMCS) Tommy Sim, diabetes has also been found in people aged between 20 and 30 years than ever before in which it only affects those aged 40 years and above.
"In Sarawak than ten people were found, two of them are suffering from diabetes.
"Most patients are 'type 2' due to poor dietary habits and an unhealthy lifestyle," he said when interviewed in the Health Check program organized by DMCS at Summer Mall yesterday.
Thus, Tommy said it was very important for every person aware of the risk of diabetes and play a role in making health examination at the clinic or hospital.
He says awareness is important because there are people who have for years been suffering from diabetes but do not know about it because the disease has no symptoms.
"If you look at the orthopedic ward at the hospital or at the eye clinic and dialysis centers, most patients are those suffering from diabetes.
"Therefore, it can be said diabetes is the parent of these diseases," he said.
DMCS program which began at 10 am at Summer Mall yesterday, even shocked, when out of 24 people who underwent medical examinations at 12 noon, about 10 people are suspected of suffering from diabetes.
Accordingly, Tommy said they suspected would be advised to do further tests at a clinic or hospital.
Following this, he explained that the organization of health screening program in public places is very important because it can help detect diabetes in addition to raising awareness about the disease risk to the public.
"This program is needed because it gives free health screening, detection of diabetes, high blood pressure, BMI and expose the public about the risks of diabetes," he said, adding, the program is conducted twice a month at selected sites around Kuching ,
Tommy added, the program is also supported by the Ministry of Health as well as charities and religious around the city.
However, he said the DMCS need support in terms of funding for these programs.
"The cost to run the program in each of our locations is RM1,000 and it is also limited to just 100 people doing health checks," he said, adding it had been only depend on funds from the Ministry of Health and the Diabetes Malaysia to carry out health checks program concerned.
Therefore, the public or the parties concerned may channel financial assistance to the DMCS to continue the program useful by contacting 082-239483 or e-mail diabetesmalaysiacns@yahoo.com.
In the meantime, Tommy also invites the public to visit the DMCS Resource Centre in Maxwell Road, Kuching, which is open on Monday to Friday from 8 am to 2 pm for exposing yourself about diabetes information.
